先生教书, xiānsheng jiāoshū The teacher teaches,
学生读书。 xuésheng dúshū the student studies.
教一课, jiào yī kè He teaches one lesson,
读一课。 dú yī kè he learns one lesson.
一日教一课, yī rì jiào yī kè In one day he teaches one lesson,
百日读百课。 bǎi rì dú bǎi kè in 100 days he learns 100 lessons.

I wanted to do something with the 36 Stratagems, but I got confused by the different versions, kept stumbling on annoying ‘business advice’, and also it seemed like I would’ve had to draw a bunch of massive battle scenes. So I opted for a strategic retreat instead. I like these sketches though.

Mandarin Tones Sing-A-Long

Meanings are made clear with just the right tone
(Mā, má, mǎ, mà, ma)
Remember all five by singing along
Mā means a mother, a mommy, a mom
Má means hemp, flax, pocked, tingling, to feel numb
Mǎ means a horse, a stallion, a mare
Mà means to scold, you are doing it wrong
Ma marks a question, just say yay or nay
(Mā, má, mǎ, mà, ma)

牛马同走, niú mǎ tóng zǒu An ox and a horse walk by together,
一前一后。 yī qián yī hòu one ahead, one behind.
小孩问老人: xiǎohái wèn lǎorén The child asks the old man:
“前的是牛吗? Yī qián de shì niú ma “The one ahead is the ox, right?
“后的是马吗?” hòu de shì mǎ ma “The one behind is the horse, right?”
老人说“是”。 lǎorén shuō shì The elder says “They are”.
